CREATURES / AMPHIBIANS
Calls of every kind echo through the forest and wetlands on rainy nights. Amami Oshima's waterways are home to amphibians found nowhere else.
ABOUT
Amami Oshima is home to frogs and newts living in a range of settings — forests, mountain streams, rice paddies, and more. On rainy nights, each species' distinct call echoes through the forest.
Many species are found only on this island, and their appearance, size, and habitat vary widely. Some live up in the trees, others turn up near water, and still others hide beneath fallen leaves.
If you encounter one, please don't shine a light on it for long — just quietly enjoy its shape and call.
Please don't touch any animal you find, and watch your footing, so as not to harm the water, eggs, or larvae. Observe quietly.
