ABOUT
About Amami Sword-tailed Newt
Males reach about 14 cm and females about 18 cm in total length. Found on Amami Oshima, Uke-jima, Kakeromajima, Yoro-jima, and other nearby islands, it breeds in ponds, rice paddies, and gentle stretches of streams. After September most individuals leave the water, and around December, during the breeding season, large numbers can be observed at the water's edge. It has a black body with yellow or orange spots, and individual variation is considerable. Okinawa is home to the related Okinawa sword-tailed newt.
