About Habu Pit Viper

Grows up to about 226 cm, one of the largest snakes on the island. Most active and easiest to observe from May through November (it may also move on warm days even in winter). Nocturnal, resting in burrows and crevices during the day. Found from lowland forests to mountain forests, grasslands, wetlands, farmland, and even trees, and it sometimes enters areas near houses while hunting rats. Feeds mainly on rats, as well as reptiles, frogs, mammals, and birds. Natural enemies include the Akamata snake and human hunters. Venomous and highly aggressive. Always keep a distance of at least 2-3 meters when observing or photographing. If approached, it does not flee — it immediately takes a striking posture and can lunge roughly two-thirds of its own body length. A bite deep in the mountains, where there is no phone signal, can become a serious emergency. Its pattern blends into the forest floor and is very hard to spot; it may be hiding nearby even when you can't see it. You cannot be too careful.
