About Ryukyu Coral Snake

Grows up to about 50 cm. Most easily observed around May and around September. The back is reddish-brown or orange with five dark brown longitudinal stripes. It is designated a "Specified Dangerous Animal," a legal category for species considered capable of harming people. Its venom is neurotoxic and stronger than the Habu's, but its head is small and its temperament is docile. If picked up, it will jab you with its tail, which is as hard as bone. It is nocturnal and scarce, so sightings are rare. It is popular enough that some people visit Amami Oshima specifically hoping to see one.

Please enjoy Amami's wildlife through photographs. Some species are protected by law or local ordinance, and capturing or removing them is prohibited.
