About Oshima Earth-boring Dung Beetle
Reaching 20mm in length, this is the largest species of Geotrupidae found in Japan. An endemic species found only on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima, it is active from autumn into winter and gathers at the droppings of the Amami rabbit and wild boar. It has the distinctive habit of cradling dung with its front legs and dragging it backwards into its own burrow. It is listed as Near Threatened on the Kagoshima Prefecture Red List.
