About Rotten Wood Cricket

A somewhat large cricket-like insect, 31–35mm long. Widely distributed across the Nansei Islands, including Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima, it lives hidden beneath the bark of rotting wood, as its Japanese name suggests. At night it calls with a distinctive "gwiii, gwiii." In warm regions, adults can be seen year-round regardless of season.

Observation Safety Notes

Please enjoy Amami's wildlife through photographs. Some species are protected by law or local ordinance, and capturing or removing them is prohibited. In special protection zones within the national park, collecting any wildlife is prohibited entirely. Please check the notes on this page, and confirm local rules before visiting any site.
