About Ueno's Glossy Riffle Beetle

A small aquatic beetle found from Yakushima through the Amami island group to the Okinawa island group (nominate subspecies). The genus Urumaelmis also includes a second species newly described from Kyushu in 2020, bringing the number of known species in Japan to two. The population on Kuchinoshima in the Tokara Islands is distinguished as a separate subspecies (*U. u. tokarana*). The detailed ecology of this species itself is still largely unknown.

Please enjoy Amami's wildlife through photographs. Some species are protected by law or local ordinance, and capturing or removing them is prohibited.
