About Notched Pygmy Backswimmer

The only species of the pygmy backswimmer family found in Japan, with a small, hemispherical body about 2.5-3mm long. Like the water boatman-relative backswimmers, it swims upside down. Known only from Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima, it is endemic to the Amami Islands, and lives in slow-flowing rivers, in spots where plant roots hang down from the bank into the water. It is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the Ministry of the Environment's insect Red List.

Observation Safety Notes

Please enjoy Amami's wildlife through photographs. Some species are protected by law or local ordinance, and capturing or removing them is prohibited. In special protection zones within the national park, collecting any wildlife is prohibited entirely. Please check the notes on this page, and confirm local rules before visiting any site.
