About Amami Odd-scaled Snake

Grows up to about 55 cm. The back is blackish brown or dark brown with a black stripe running along the midline; the belly is yellow. On Amami it is a legendary snake that you only encounter under just the right conditions. It sometimes comes to the surface on days of heavy rain. Nocturnal and subterranean, it lives in forests, grassy areas near water, and farmland. It feeds on earthworms. It is scarcer and harder to find here than the Amami odd-scaled snakes on other islands. It is very slender and small, so you may not notice it even if you drive right past.

Observation Safety Notes

Please enjoy Amami's wildlife through photographs. Some species are protected by law or local ordinance, and capturing or removing them is prohibited. In special protection zones within the national park, collecting any wildlife is prohibited entirely. Please check the notes on this page, and confirm local rules before visiting any site.
