ABOUT
About Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle
An invasive species native to the Indochina Peninsula region. The first record in Japan is believed to be its introduction to Ishigaki Island in imported materials from Taiwan in the early 20th century; it subsequently spread northward, and was confirmed on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima in 1991. It is now established and breeding naturally across nearly the entire Nansei Islands. It is known as an agricultural pest that bores into the stems and cores of palms, pineapple, and sugarcane, and there is concern about competition with native rhinoceros beetle species.
