ABOUT
About Amami Ridged Minute Moss Beetle
A tiny aquatic beetle described as a new species from an individual collected by chance on Amami Oshima in spring 1997, belonging to the minute moss beetle family (a different family from the "gamushi" water scavenger beetles despite the similar Japanese name). About 1.9-2.3mm long. Found on Amami Oshima and Okinawa Island, it lives in relatively open sections of mountain streams, though it is not very abundant. Habitat degradation from river development and bank reinforcement work is a concern, and it was newly listed as Near Threatened (NT) in the 2010 revision of the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
