About Giant Katydid

A katydid found in warm regions from the Izu Peninsula southward, including Amami Oshima and the rest of the Nansei Islands. It begins calling in late summer, and as autumn deepens it sings loudly with a rattling "gyururururu." Its early calls are spaced apart — "gyuu, gyuu" — before gradually becoming one continuous, unbroken sound.

Observation Safety Notes

Please enjoy Amami's wildlife through photographs. Some species are protected by law or local ordinance, and capturing or removing them is prohibited. In special protection zones within the national park, collecting any wildlife is prohibited entirely. Please check the notes on this page, and confirm local rules before visiting any site.
